TENANTS' LIST OF PROBLEMS AT 1475 KING ST. W.

Electrical

  • very old wiring, fuses blow very easily, repairs are very slow
  • we’ve been told that A, B & C sections of the complex are all on the same main fuse
  • some tenants have no ceiling lights, just live, hanging wires
  • tenants pay for their own hydro, yet are told not to run air conditioners, because the building’s wiring will overload and blow fuses
  • all lights were out in the stairwell of B section from the second week in July, until the third week in August, leaving tenants to negotiate the stairs in complete darkness for over a month
  • many tenants still have the old, 2-prong outlets and some have seen sparks when trying to use these outlets

Structural

  • the bathroom ceiling in apt. B4 fell in on July 24th and is still not repaired
  • the bathroom ceiling in apt. A5 is slowly crumbling
  • the bathroom sink in apt. A5 is coming right off the wall
  • the kitchen floor in apt. A7 appears to be sinking
  • a kitchen cabinet that fell off the wall in apt. B5 in July has yet to be repaired – UPDATE – finally repaired on August 29th!!!!!!
  • all downspouts are plugged and after a rainfall, water falls in sheets all around the building for hours – worrying us about the condition of our flat roof with the water left pooling on it
  • stairs in most of the stairwells are in very poor condition

Fire Hazards

  • alleyway is often overflowing with garbage, junk and building material refuse
  • extra building material refuse has been piled into the basements of A and B sections, along with former tenants' abandoned storage items and old paint cans

Security

  • entrance doors to each section do not lock properly and are often propped open 24/7, giving full access to all apartments
  • due to this, our poorly lit laundry room was used by a homeless person off and on through the colder months this past winter

General

  • part of B section have been overrun with cockroaches for almost 10 months and they are now spreading throughout the entire building
  • pest control was brought in August 17th to spray parts of the building, but does not seem to have been very effective, to date
  • most people in the building without a cat, have mice
  • rats are living in the junk & garbage filled alleyway
  • not enough recycling bins for our building, 2 grey bins and one blue bin are constantly overflowing
  • when bulbs burn out in stairwells or outside lighting, it takes a very long time and multiple complaints before they are replaced – some are out in B and D sections right now
